The CAN Collaboration

Cans have become such a ubiquitous part of our lives we rarely give them a second thought. As steadfast drink or food containers, cans have an essential role in our supply chains and consumption patterns.

Though well-known artists such as Andy Worhol have utilized the can as a subject for their artwork, digital art opens a whole new world of creative possibilities for these somewhat mundane staples that have become a cornerstone for consumerism.

It is in that light that we present this interview with CryptoArtNFTs.com, also known as CAN, as we discuss with their upcoming digital art project CAN Collaboration # 1.

The CAN Collaboration, set to launch on July 5th on Kalamint, will feature the work of 18 digital artists as they reimagine the can as a new digital canvas of sorts. This digital art exploration brings the simple can to an entire new level, creating an immersive experience that I think would please Worhol to no end!

The CAN Collaboration Interview

Thanks for taking the time to get back to me. Cans is such an interesting platform for an art project. Certainly, cans have considerable associations with consumerism as containers for food and beverages. Cans also have some precedence in art history such as with Andy Worhol’s Campbell soup cans that sparked the Pop art movement.

Tell us about why you chose the can as the canvas, so to speak for this digital art gallery.

We chose the can as a theme after giving all of the participating artists the chance to propose ideas for the first collaboration. As we’re using CAN as a shortened title for https://cryptoartnfts.com, it seemed like a good idea to take inspiration from Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell’s soup cans.

I introduced the spray can and ‘soda’ can as alternatives for the artists as well, as I felt that it was important to give people options.

Were the artists that are participating in this event given specific parameters in terms of can size? Obviously, digital art platforms provide an artistic environment that was unavailable to artists like Warhol. Digital art also vastly expands the accessibility of art to reach participants far beyond the conventional art gallery.

NFTs are potential game changers in terms of how art itself is “consumed”. Do you have any thoughts on this? What are the implications for the NFT commoditization of art?

Yes, the artists were given a template to follow in terms of the resolution and aspect ratio of the artwork. We felt that it was important to fix this early on in to give people a solid set of parameters.

I think NFTs have given artists the opportunity to express themselves in many different ways. Personally, as a multimedia artist who is versed in traditional and digital techniques, NFTs have finally enabled me to create digital art that has a form of authentication that enables collectors to buy art in the knowledge that it is not a duplicate.

The ability to create unique single edition or limited-edition artworks on platforms such as Kalamint have been a real game changer for me and countless others.

The traditional art gallery will always be there, but I’d like to think that NFTs are beginning to make inroads into the traditional art market. You only have to see the impact of Beeple’s recent sale at Christies where he achieved over $69 million to realize that NFTs are now an accepted artform for many art collectors.

While Beeple and many other ‘big name’ artists continue to sell work at very high prices, it should be noted that there are thousands of artists who do not achieve these kinds of figures. What is exciting for me, and many others is the knowledge that there are scores of artists out there who may become the ‘next Beeple’, and that these are very early days for the NFT art landscape.

How were the artists chosen for this event? How many artists are participating?

The 18 artists involved in the project are featured artists on https://cryptoartnfts.com, which is an art review website that focuses solely on the NFT art landscape. I have personally reached out to each artist in order to invite them to be featured.

These are artists that have been chosen purely on their artistic merit and in many ways, they reflect my desire to showcase the talent of new and established artists in a more detailed way. There are some very well-known names in the NFT art world in the collection, but equally there are some emerging names that bring fresh ideas and aesthetics to the scene.

Being a fan of Monster Energy drinks, I’ve often admired some of the artwork on these cans. I’ve often considered these Monster cans as a transition from mundane, traditional cans into something more.

This trend is pervasive in the beer and wine industry as well.  Is this a part of a trend for more thoughtful and artistic design even with mass produced products? Did any of this influence your choice for cans as the format for this project?

The Monster energy drinks are a good example of what great design can achieve in terms of catching the attention of the consumer, and contemporary design has become wonderfully eclectic.

The lines between art and design can sometimes be blurred in these cases, but I think I’d take more inspiration from the art world and the aforementioned example of Andy Warhol where there is more of a desire to express an artistic concept.

What are your goals for the CANS project?

This is the first CAN collaboration, and we hope to continue involving both established and new artists coming onto the website in new collections in the near future. I’d love to see these artists get the recognition that they deserve by their peers and collectors of NFT art, as I genuinely believe they’ve created something very special.

We are excited to able to mint on Kalamint as a large group on the July 5th. Normally this would have had a huge cost associated with it, but this isn’t a problem with Tezos which also runs at much lower energy usage as well. You can follow CAN on our twitter feed for regular updates at https://twitter.com/cryptoartnfts1. Also, check out our CANS event trailer.

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with us. I’m really looking forward to this digital art exhibition and strongly encourage everyone to check it out!
