Manchester United Collectibles

In November 2022 I started receiving emails from Manchester United about Digital Collectibles, Digital Keys, Tezos, blockchains, Web3, the possibility of winning prizes and then it mentioned Discord!

Once I saw the word “Discord” I deleted the email and didn’t think anything else of it. Discord was something my kids used, “wanting to be mods”, looking after ‘Discord Servers’! It was ‘new-age stuff’ that I was just too old to get involved in. Tezos, Web3, blockchains? They may as well have been written in a different language as I had never heard of any of that before – the email went straight into the bin.

I’ve always been a massive Manchester United supporter ever since I was born in the late 70s. I was born a Red, my father supported United, we had a neighbour that played for United in the 30s and ended up being a Chief United Scout for United and is credited with discovering United legends like Paul McGrath, Kevin Moran and Johnny Carey and many more. Manchester United was all around me. In Ireland at the time you were either a Liverpool supporter or a United supporter. I unfortunately had an older brother who supported Liverpool…..but we can’t all be perfect, right? 😉

I have many different Manchester United collectibles from signed photos, autographed footballs cards, game tickets, match programmes, scarfs, autographed United art and various pieces from throughout the years, so I’m always interested in picking up anything related to United.

The emails that grabbed my attention…

I started receiving more and more emails from Manchester United. One such email had a heading, “Club Memorabilia is evolving. Get ready for the digital collectibles”. This grabbed my attention. I opened the email and the first thing you see is an artistic image of a tunnel with the United devil on the walls and large keyhole which looked onto the Old Trafford pitch. This email was a little different than the others. I remember the first paragraph which said, “What connects you to United? Maybe it’s that shirt from ’99 or the programme from your first match. Ticket stubs, scarfs, signed shirts – these pieces remind us this is our Club. Well now there’s a new way to connect.”

The email went on to mention Tezos:

“Tezos is Manchester United’s Official Blockchain partner and will be powering the Club’s first-ever digital collectible – a historic piece of united memorabilia, built using Web3 technology…These new digital collectibles come packed with exclusive real life and digital benefits, including the chance to chat with club legends in a new virtual community.”

As a United fan this sounded really interesting. On the email it gave a link to register and to find out all about Tezos, what a blockchain is, what Web3 is, so off I went and registered and started reading all about what each one was. I was even more interested now so I went off and started doing my own research on all the above. The more I read the more interested I became. Manchester United website suggested that I setup a digital wallet with Kukai so after doing some research on what that was all about I eventually got it set up and I was ready to go.

It wasn’t long before United & Tezos issued their first digital collectible for free to those who registered. It was a special digital key. The keys came in Common, Rare & Ultrarare. Depending on which varity of key you had depended on when you got access to their next and main digital collectible – the ‘DEVIL’.

The Devils are unique pieces of Club memorabilia. Inspired by the past, present and future of the Club, the 7,777 devil collection unlocked a new digital identity for fans. And as a key holder you got first access to purchase a digital devil for £30. Powered by Tezos and brought to you by Tezos ecosystem companies, no two Devils are the same.

The Traits and rewards

Their traits can even unlock exclusive rewards by using real in-game moments, like clean sheets, home wins, free kick goals and lots more. So for me this all sounded fun. Collecting United memorabilia while also having the chance of winning things related to United. It would make watching a United game even more interesting. Hoping for clean sheets, home wins, praying for a seemingly impossible free kick goal; I even began watching the WSL games as they too were counted for rewards, so not only was I watching the United men’s games I was suddenly watching United’s

After the digital keys were issued it wasn’t long before the Devils were released. They came in 3 types, Red, Green & Blue. Reds were common, Green were rare and Blue were Ultrarare. Manchester United and Tezos made it super easy to receive your digital collectible. Collectibles.manutd.com was/is the home for your whole Manchester United digital collection and can link to your digital wallet (in my case, Kukai)

So now I had my key, I had my devil, I had my wallet, I knew the in-game traits – what do I do now?

Yes I eventually registered for Discord! I mentioned it to my eldest son and he laughed! What had I let myself in for? I’m going to be surrounded by kids! I joined the Official Manchester United Discord server and followed the instructions on how to link my digital wallet. For the first couple of weeks I just watched and read what people were saying. United had different channels setup so if I wanted to read or talk about Web3 or had any queries I could use that channel. They have a general ‘fan chat’ channel where all fans hang out. Within the first few days I could see that not everyone on the discord server was there because of the new digital collectibles but instead just because it was run by Manchester United but owning a Devil does have a super perk, which is its own private channel for just Devil owners, so you knew everyone chatting in there were over the age of 18 and owned a devil, so without saying a word you knew you already had something in common. This is where I typed “hello” for the first time on discord and almost 1 year later (December 2023) I have met some incredible Manchester United fans from all over the world, almost every country you can think of is represented in the server. At the moment the are over 93,000 fans registered which is the largest Official Football Club Discord server.

Discord, the place to be:

Discord has now become the go-to place for all United information for me. All the club news, discord activities, trivia’s, AMAs (Ask Me Anything) with United players and staff, giveaways, prizes – there is always something going on. But the most important thing for me is the community. I had read about online communities in various places before but never really got the concept of it until I started with the United Discord – especially the Devils Channel, because you already have common ground that you all own devils, you are all invested, you all support United, it certainly made it a lot easier to chat to people in a live scenario – rather than for example text messages. I’ve met some really lovely people that I would happily call friends – even though I have never officially met them, YET. Hopefully one day soon I will get a chance to meet them.

Having the chance to be part of this journey with Manchester United and Tezos is incredible. In reality we are only in the infancy in what digital collectibles can achieve. With this project already I have had the opportunity to ask questions and listen live to first team players like Scott McTominay, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes as well as previous staff who worked with Sir Alex Ferguson, ex-players and also current Women’s team players.

The past season

This past season with the help of Tezos, Manchester United launched a ‘92/’93 Digital Collection which was brilliant for my generation of fans. It gave fans the opportunity to have a virtual meet with legends like Denis Irwin, Gary Pallister and Captain Marvel himself Bryan Robson who was my hero growing up. It also gave fans of the ‘92/’93 Collection special hand signed Stanley Chow prints of whichever of Denis, Gary or Brian you wanted. A lot of fans will have begun their journey when United won the treble in ‘99 but I remember the times before Sir Alex Ferguson so the ‘92/’93 period was one of my fondest memories – Steve Bruce with those goals against Sheffield Wednesday – still gives me goosebumps thinking of it.

This Season

This season ‘23/’24 Manchester United and Tezos are offering EVERYONE free digital collectibles for every Manchester United league, Champions League home games for both men’s & women’s games. For 48 hours before Kick-off visit collectible.manutd.com and click ‘Collect’ to get the latest free collectible. If you missed one you can use the official secondary market objkt.com – Collect all the league home games (men & women) to be in with a chance to win a chance to be invited to watch a United training session. Collect all European home games (Men & Women) and you could win kits signed by players and collect EVERY match and you could win a. VIP trip to Old Trafford to watch United play!

So not only do you get to collect Official Manchester United Digital Memorabilia, you could win prizes for doing it! Now that is how brands can use the power of Web3 to offer amazing utilities to fans.

These opportunities would not exist without the foresight of Manchester United and the technology from Tezos. It is the future. It is a blockchain to build, play and collect on; and a partnership that seems to be the perfect match. From the past year I’ve already seen some of the world’s biggest brands follow suit, like F1 McLaren, FC Barcelona, Nike, Ducati and many, many more. Over the coming years digital collectibles will be something that will be part of daily life, just like your physical debit card has already been replaced by a digital version on your phone or smart watch. Already there are businesses creating digital collectables that can be used as official tickets to gain entry to places. There is a lot to look forward to in relation to collecting and using digital NFTs/Collectibles to bring real life utility to people. It is already happening but over the coming years we will see it on a greater scale.

I am glad I eventually read one of the Manchester United emails last December 2022. I have learnt so much about the power of Tezos, how artists, companies and brands use the power of the technology. More and more big brands, small brands, football clubs will all soon join the ‘revolution’ of the digital collectible and offer utilities to people.
