The Tezos blockchain activated Paris, its 16th protocol upgrade, adopted by bakers (validators) through Tezos’ unique on-chain governance mechanism.

Data Availability Layer (DAL) is introduced with this upgrade, boosting L2 throughput unlocking new use cases in gaming, ticketing and services requiring high-speed transactions.

Block times are also reduced to 10s for better latency and faster finality, enhancing performance without compromising security.

New features like Adaptive Issuance & Staking brings an overhaul of Tezos’ Proof-of-Stake mechanism to better align with real-world usage and enhance chain security.

Tezos protocol’s  sixteenth  upgrade, Paris, was activated on Mainnet on June 4th, 2024. Tezos is a pioneering blockchain known for its self-amending capabilities and community-driven, on-chain governance system. The upgrade makes the Tezos blockchain faster, more scalable, more robust, and continues its tradition of community-driven development and innovation.

Key features of the upgrade include the Data-Availability Layer (DAL), 10-second block time, Adaptive Issuance, Staking, and Adaptive Slashing.

Boosting throughput on Layer 2 with the Data Availability Layer

The Data Availability Layer (DAL) is a major enhancement introduced in this upgrade. The DAL promotes a decentralized, open, and reliable data distribution network, allowing better participation with even more affordable hardware and bandwidth requirements. By activating the DAL, Tezos significantly boosts the throughput for Smart Rollups with the ability to handle millions of transactions per second in future, which is hugely beneficial for high-demand applications like gaming, ticketing, and services requiring higher throughput of data.

The rollup data remains accessible and verifiable, supporting a wide range of decentralized applications (dApps). Implementation of the DAL makes Tezos a leading blockchain in terms of scalability without compromising security, making it a robust choice for developers and businesses looking to leverage blockchain technology for large-scale, data-intensive applications.

Better performance on Layer 1 – maintaining affordability and decentralization

The new upgrade cuts the time it takes for new blocks to be added from 15 seconds down to just 10 seconds for better latency and faster finality. This means transactions will be processed & confirmed more swiftly, resulting in a smoother user experience, while not harming the network’s dependability and security, rendering it more reliable for critical transactions.

This advancement is significant because it directly impacts users’ interaction with the Tezos blockchain. Faster transaction processing means less waiting time and a more responsive network. Moreover, this increased speed and reliability make Tezos a more attractive platform for various real-life applications. For instance, in financial transactions, quicker confirmation times can enable faster trades and settlements. Overall, this upgrade provides efficiency and usability to Tezos, making it a compelling choice for developers and users alike in the blockchain ecosystem.

Adaptive issuance and stronger foundations for Proof-of-Stake

Adaptive issuance makes the economics of Tezos’ native currency, tez, fit better with real-world use. It makes tez more compatible for use for lending markets, DeFi, and rollups. The process reduces the need for custodians, such as exchanges, to engage in baking. This reduction decreases administrative burdens and potential regulatory impacts. Additionally, lower reward rates can potentially mitigate tax liabilities. New staking mechanism increases the amount of funds locked in Tezos’ Proof-of-Stake, which makes the network more secure. The new staker role in Tezos allows users to contribute to a baker’s security deposit without relinquishing control of their funds, earning rewards while avoiding risks associated with centralized staking alternatives.
