The Angry Teenagers NFT / Reforestation Project

The Angry Teenagers are on a mission to help people take action on climate change.

Led by Ben Whately, founder of language learning app Memrise (60m+ users worldwide), The Angry Teenagers are creating geolocated, dynamically updating NFTs that directly fund reforestation projects.

Each Angry Teenager NFT represents a piece of degraded land and each Angry Teenager purchased, funds the work to bring that land back to life through reforestation.

When you buy the Angry Teenager, it is not a one-off donation – the money goes into a blockchain wallet, and funds the project over time.

You only release money as the project reaches milestones, so the whole process is totally accountable.

For every ton of carbon that the land captures you get a return because companies pay for each ton of carbon in order to reach net zero.

Angry Teenagers NFTs are artworks born out of our anger, confusion, dissatisfaction, and the fear of living in mass consumption, drifting in the world that seems to be controlled by someone else.

“We’re angry about the climate mess we’re in. We’re also pretty confused by it and, frankly, terrified. We see this unfolding catastrophe, but we don’t know how to fix it. What can I do to make a real difference?

We’re not alone: 70% of millennials and Gen-Z in the US see climate action as their number 1 priority – but only 30% have done anything about it in the last year. We want to create a product that makes it super easy to take meaningful direct action.”

– Ben Whately, founder, The Angry Teenagers

The Angry Teenagers are about using everything we have — culture technology, creativity, economic incentives — to throw a pig on the tracks of the way things are heading, and build a paradigm that is greener, fairer… a bit less of a catastrophe and a bit more fun.

But they are more than that: they are tools to drive direct investment into reforestation.

How It Works:

  • The first project being funded is a youth organisation in Ghana who are training young people to rebuild an ecosystem on land that has been intensively logged.
  • Each Angry Teenager stands up for an actual piece of land in the project – geolocated using What3Words.
  • The NFT metadata changes as the land changes, capturing everything that is happening – photos, biodiversity, and the impact on people who are looking after the land, so it’s totally transparent.
  • When you buy the Angry Teenager, it is not a one-off donation – the money goes into a blockchain wallet, and funds the project over time. NFT holders only vote to release money as the project reaches milestones, so the whole process is totally accountable.

Below, shows a Drone photo of the site of the first Angry Teenagers reforestation project in Agogo, Ghana:

As the forests grow, carbon credits are sold, and the funds are returned to the wallet to invest in more reforestation projects.

The more forests The Angry Teenagers plant, the more carbon is captured, the more money can be invested in planting more forests: it creates an exponential cycle of growing investment into reforestation, maximizing your impact.
