ClubNFT: A Tool To Download All Of The IPFS Data Associated With All Of Your NFTs With The Click Of A Button

ClubNFT allows you to download all of the IPFS data associated with all of your NFTs with the click of a button, with no app to download, and with no transactions to approve.

The tool works with all Tezos wallet addresses.

ClubNFT allows you to download all of the IPFS data associated with all of your NFTs with the click of a button, with no app to download, and with no transactions to approve.

The tool works with all Tezos wallet addresses and so far over 2,800 wallets have been added to back up over 260,000 NFTs to date. Over 760,000 IPFS links and over 15 Terabytes of NFT content have been protected.

ClubNFT has been created by well-known artist Artnome (Jason Bailey) who is the co-founder and CEO, and also full-stack engineer Chris King who is the co-founder and CTO.

Artnome has long been a Tezos NFT art fan and was a key advocate during the early days of Hic Et Nunc, when the clean NFT art space was in the early stages of development.

Back in 2021, the ClubNFT project raised over $3 million in a seed raise, which included Galaxy Digital as a lead investor.

Why ClubNFT?

The reason for ClubNFT is simple, people (both artists and collectors) often assume that their NFT content is always hosted somewhere and is always safe to persist into the future.

Oftentimes, people think the NFT content itself always lives on the blockchain, which is almost never the case.

In actual fact, there are big risks associated with the storage of many NFTs and the availability of that content in the years to come.

This is where ClubNFT comes in to help safe guard the availability of NFTs to persist well into the future, both to be stored locally and to be pinned to decentralized storage networks such as IPFS.

Artnome himself lost millions of dollars in NFTs purchased in 2017 and 2018 and ClubNFT have actually created a course to highlight the need for safe NFT backup.

Let’s take a look at how NFTs are usually stored:

  • Just 10% of NFTs are actually stored on the blockchain.
  • A staggering 40% of NFTs are actually stored on private web servers.
  • 50% of NFTs are stored on IPFS, these NFTs can be saved and backed up using ClubNFT.

IPFS is a ‘…distributed system for storing and accessing files, websites, applications, and data. Content is accessible through peers located anywhere in the world, that might relay information, store it, or do both. IPFS knows how to find what you ask for using its content address rather than its location.’

Like other peer-to-peer file distribution systems, such as BitTorrent, in IPFS the files are broken down into different parts and stored across a network of nodes.

In IPFS, the network tracks the file by hashes. When the parts are assembled together, based on their hash value, it recreates the original file. Unlike BitTorrent, IPFS doesn’t have a central server tracking system.

Even with 50% of NFTs being stored on IPFS a decentralized file storage system, such storage can still not be 100% bulletproof.

As Coindesk reported: ‘Just because a file is available “on BitTorrent” doesn’t mean there are any seeders or that it’s there forever. IPFS is like this. The address/CID is permanent, to a degree as it gets passed around the DHT, but the underlying asset, or file, that the IPFS address points to can be lost as easily as any file on any random web server.’

Some tools such as Pinata have been created to help with such IPFS persistence and allow users to ‘pin’ an NFT using IPFS.

When you pin an NFT file you are basically telling IPFS not to get rid of it and keep it available. Pinning a CID (a content identifier label used to point to material in IPFS) tells IPFS that the data is important and shouldn’t be removed when the node is near its disk space limit.

ClubNFT takes the ethos of decentralization one step further, allowing you to take control of all the IPFS data associated with your NFTs locally without relying on anyone in between.

This means you will always have a backup of your NFTs and can always re-pin in the future.

ClubNFT and Tezos Wallets

The ClubNFT platform works with Tezos wallets, so you can now back up your Tezos CleanNFTs using the platform.

The tool will allow you to download all of the IPFS data associated with your Tezos NFTs, this will ensure that you will always be able to re-pin back to IPFS in the future if this was ever needed, but you will also have a hard backup copy stored locally too.

All you have to do is to create an account on ClubNFT with just your email address (no passwords etc or other information is needed).

Once you are signed in (via email link) you are then able to enter your Tezos wallet address starting with ‘tz’, (or Tezos domain associated with an address i.e. (yourownwallethere).tez) and the system will begin searching for NFT content associated with that wallet.

Depending on ClubNFT usage and wallet size, NFTs can take up to a few days to fully download. ClubNFT will send an email in 5 days letting you know your NFT backup is ready.

It is advised to backup your NFTs, download the zip file, and store the zip file somewhere safe like on an external hard drive if possible (but not necessarily to play with the file as it’s always hard to tell what is in the files that other people created).

Due to the nature of the content, files can be very large, even as zip files.
