If adopted, the Paris proposals will bring the following major updates and improvements to the Tezos protocol:

Lower latency and faster finality with 10s block times without compromising decentralization or security.

The activation of the Data Availability Layer (the DAL) on Mainnet, boosting throughput and scalability of Smart Rollups with the capacity to support millions of transactions.

The Paris B upgrade proposal introduces a major overhaul of Proof-of-Stake (PoS) fundamentals, with Adaptive Issuance, Staking and Adaptive Slashing. 

Adaptive Issuance ties token issuance to an on-chain market for staked funds. Staking enables a new staker role compatible with the pre-existing Liquid PoS mechanism.

Adaptive Slashing refines the slashing mechanism to differentiate between sporadic incidents arising from involuntary errors, from malicious, sustained attacks.

All these features put together mean that Tezos pioneers a more efficient and dynamic approach to PoS consensus. 

By comparison, Paris A does not include these features. Instead, it offers bakers the possibility to vote for activating them later, via a dedicated on-chain signalling mechanism.

A Closer Look At The Paris Upgrade Proposals

Nomadic Labs, in collaboration with Marigold, TriliTech, and Functori, has announced the completion of the Tezos Paris A and Paris B protocol upgrade proposals. These proposals, distinguished by their hash identifiers: PtParisA6ruu136piHaBC7cQLDP87JEqtczJWP2pLa5QCELGBH5 and PtParisBQscdCm6Cfow6ndeU6wKJyA3aV1j4D3gQBQMsTQyJCrz respectively, offer significant advancements to the Tezos ecosystem.

Both Paris A and Paris B aim to enhance the efficiency and functionality of the Tezos blockchain. Key features of these proposals include:

Reduced Latency and Faster Finality: The implementation of 10-second block times promises lower latency and quicker finality without compromising the network’s decentralization or security.

Data Availability Layer (DAL): This critical addition to the Mainnet boosts the scalability of Smart Rollups, such as Etherlink, by providing increased throughput and data bandwidth. Tezos Layer 1 now has the capability to attest the publication of data residing outside of Layer 1 blocks, significantly enhancing overall performance.

Refinements to Tezos Proof-of-Stake (PoS): Both proposals introduce improvements to the PoS mechanism, streamlining the process of acquiring and updating baking rights. These refinements aim to enhance network efficiency and security.

Paris B goes further with the inclusion of Adaptive Issuance, Staking, and Adaptive Slashing. These features represent a substantial overhaul of Tezos PoS fundamentals, introducing mechanisms for dynamically adjusting token issuance, enhancing stakeholder participation, and refining slashing penalties to differentiate between inadvertent errors and malicious behavior.

Paris A, on the other hand, offers bakers the opportunity to vote for the activation of these features at a later stage via a dedicated on-chain signaling mechanism. This approach allows for ongoing deliberation within the community regarding the adoption of these advanced features.
