Confidential Computing For Tezos Baking

Nomadic Labs and Tarides have collaborated with IBM in a joint effort to enable confidential computing technology to be available for Tezos baking.

The collaboration and infrastructure development was discussed by Jean-Yves Girard in a LinkedIn blog post here, this article also includes a tutorial on how to deploy.

Confidential Computing ‘…is a cloud computing technology that isolates sensitive data in an encrypted CPU enclave during processing. The contents of the enclave — the data being processed, and the techniques that are used to process it — are accessible only to authorized programming code, and are invisible and unknowable to anything or anyone else, including the cloud provider.’

The introduction of Confidential Computing when it comes to Tezos baking could prove very important for institutional bakers, looking for high security and data integrity.

It enables institutional bakers to run Trusted Secure Environment with IBM technology. This is important for digital asset software with Tezos node support such as Metaco Harmonize used by several Tier1 bank custodies, including Societe Generale who can now leverage the technology.

Institutional/enterprise bakers on Tezos with the help of IBM Confidential Computing infrastructure can now ensure they meet regulatory requirements ensuring compliance in validation.

“Running a baker with IBM confidential computing, guarantees the integrity and the confidentiality of both software and data as well as easy compliance with regulators or auditors’ requirements.”

– Jean-Yves Girard, Architect for IBM Digital Assets and Hyper Protect Cloud Services

This advancement is not aimed at individuals or beginners to Tezos baking though and it currently requires users to compile Tezos software from the source code and to use a specific Nomadic Labs library.
